Can Human Behavior be modeled? There are some who disagree vehemently and others who agree. Despite the debate, we humans continue to rely on models to explain why someone has acted in a certain way, to evaluate his/her actions, and to predict how this individual might behave in the future.
Behaviors are there for everyone to see, but causes are hidden from view. So we tend to rely on assumptions, in the form of implicit ‘models of human behavior’. This session describes the major models that we typically employ in organizational settings as well as in daily life.
Bullying can happen in the workplace in many ways. Sometimes it’s obvious, but more often it is seen in subtle ways. In either case, it can be viewed as an abuse of power, which if persistent can have devastating effects on the work environment when not addressed and properly understood.
Dr Marilyn Aitkenhead, has worked with both the bullied and those accused of being bullies. While one in 10 bullies may be pathologically manipulative types, most, she says, can be taught to realize, that their exercise of power can be experienced as abusive by others at work.
